American artist, connoisseur, and art dealer, born Mar. 17, 1822 in New York City; died there on Aug. 11, 1904. Avery began his career as an engraver on copper and wood, then established himself as an art dealer in 1865, making annual purchasing trips to Europe each year between 1871 and 1882. Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884): missionary to China, 1833-1845; printer and author; helped prepare Chinese dictionary; accompanied Perry expedition to Japan as interpreter in 1853-1854; in 1856 became secretary and interpreter of the American Legation to China, and remained until 1876; in 1877 became professor of Chinese at Yale University.
